How to Check ALT Text on any Website

Alt text issues are invisible when you browse a website normally. You won’t see them in the page layout, and your visitors won’t either. But Google does, and it affects how your images rank.

There are two ways to check alt text: manually, or with an automated checker.

On any webpage, right-click an image and select “Inspect” (Chrome, Firefox, Edge). This opens the HTML source directly on that element. Look for the alt attribute inside the <img> tag:

<img src="product.jpg" alt="blue running shoes for men">

If the alt attribute is missing, empty, or contains something like “image” or “IMG_4832”, you have found an issue.

This works fine for checking 3 or 4 images on a single page. For anything beyond that, it becomes slow and unreliable. Duplicate alt text in particular is almost impossible to catch manually.

Paste any URL in the checker above. It scans every image on that page, classifies each one, and gives you a global ALT Quality Score from 0 to 100 in seconds.

No login, no installation, no limit on which website you test.

The 4 Types of Alt Text Issues, Scored from 0 to 100

The checker does not just flag problems. It classifies every image into one of 5 categories and assigns a score. Here is what each category means and why it matters for your SEO.

Missing Alt Attribute

The image has no alt attribute at all.

<img src="product.jpg">

This is the most common issue and the most damaging. Google has nothing to work with, and screen readers skip the image entirely. Every image without an alt attribute is a missed ranking opportunity.

Generic Alt Text

The alt attribute contains a meaningless value: “image”, “photo”, “logo”, “banner”, or a raw filename like “IMG_4832.jpg”.

These values tell search engines nothing useful. The checker flags any alt text that matches known generic terms or looks like an auto-generated filename.

Alt Text Too Short

A single word like “dog” or “chair” is technically present but lacks the context Google needs. Good alt text is typically 5 to 15 words and describes the image in its context, not just what the subject is.

Duplicate Alt Text

Two or more images on the same page share the exact same description. Search engines cannot differentiate them, which signals low content quality. This is especially common on product pages with multiple images of the same item.
